We long for our children and young people to grow up following the King. We wait for them to choose to trust Jesus Christ and to grow more like him. But the experience of many, and the statistics tell us, that too many of the next generation are walking away from Christ, and our churches, in their late teens and their early twenties. Whether we are a teacher or a parent, sooner or later we realise that giving commands, telling Bible stories and attending church does not change their behaviour and it does not make them Christians. Jesus taught that behaviour always starts with the heart. How can we engage our children and young people’s hearts as we teach them the Bible?
How can we lead them to a living, dependent faith in Christ? This is true discipleship.
